Antofagasta 4-8-2 Locomotives in Chile

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class unknown (Locobase 14478)

Data from "Antofagasta (Chili) And Bolivia Railway, Metre Gauge, Sixteen 4-8-2 Type Locomotives," Vulcan Foundry Company Magazines, Vol 3, No. 3 (Autumn 1954), pp. 16-18. Works numbers were 6166-6181 in 1954.

Oil-burning and fitted with Belpaire fireboxes, this class of Mountains were designed to negotiate curves with radii as small as 75 metres (246 feet). Ten of the engines went to the Bolivian section, six to the Chilean section.

NB: Tube length is an estimate based on the calculated tube and flue heating surface areas and a further calculation using the known counts and diameters of the two sizes of flues.
