Anglo-Chilean Nitrate Articulated Locomotives in Chile

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 101 (Locobase 14397)

Data from DeGolyer, Volume 57, pp. 311+. See also P Allen Copeland, "Baldwin 0-6-6-0 Locomotives Sent to Chile", unpublished manuscript dated 6 June 2009, supplied by Allen Stanley in August 2013 from his extensive Rail Data Exchange collection and Martin Coombs,Chilean steam locomotive list, Part 2, Standard, 4' 6", 4' 2" and 3' 6" locos, 2018, p. 95 downloaded from [link], last accessed 8 April 2022. Works numbers were 46494-46497, 46529 in September 1917 and 46531, 46603-46604 in October, 46605 in November.

The onset of the Russian Revolution in November (Julian date: October) 1917 led to the cancellation of orders for hundreds of locomotives, including a batch of 51 light Mallets. Thirty-nine were sent along to Iraq (Locobase 14395). Another nine went to the Andean reaches mined the ACN and served by the FCTT; each engine cost $47,500. These had been numbered 101-105, 107-110 for the Russian Government.

Copeland was able to confirm that the ACN road numbers for the first five were the same, but could not be sure of the last four. Coombs's extensive history of Chilean locomotives, published in 2018, contends that most of the batch could be vouched for.
