Data from Krupp im Dienst der Dampflokomotive (Essen, Germany: 1940), p 102. Henschel & Sohn works numbers were 22952-22956 in 1936 and 23550-23554 in 1937. Orenstein & Koppel supplied five including works number 12952 for engine 324. Krupp works numbers were 1701-1705 in July 1937.
Three years after the Essen-based mega-industry that was Friedrich Krupp supplied thirteen Mogul locomotives to the Tongpu (also transliterated as Tung-pu) later renamed Datong-Puzhou), five larger, more powerful metre-gauge Decapods emerged to join them. (See Locobase 21286 for more on the railway and a cite to a much fuller account.)
Locobase has found no other Decapod built for the same gauge, but three German builders agreed to produce them. In this instance, adding two more driven axles maintained the required axle loading (ca 16,500 kg) while larger-diameter cylinders and smaller drivers generated about 50% more starting tractive effort.
After the Chinese Communist victory in 1949, the railways redesignated the class DK 51.
