Kowloon-Canton 2-6-0 Locomotives in China

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class unknown (Locobase 15969)

Data from "2-8-0 Locomotive, Canton-Kowloon Railway" The Locomotive, Volume 16, No 219 (15 November 1910), p. 241.

The photo of this locomotive on page 243 shows that even a "small" locomotive can dwarf a man of average height, as the bowler-hatted gent standing under the "K" of the engine's tender demonstrated. The design seems quite up to date for a mixed-traffic Mogul with outside constant-lead radial valve gear actuating piston valves. Its Belpaire firebox was a common choice among British builders at the time.

The illustrated engine was one of "several" of the class, according to the report and must have been among the very first to serve the British section of 21 miles (33.8 km), which opened on 7 October 1910.
