Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 31 (Locobase 12411)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 23 p. 24. Works numbers were 17739-17740 in May 1900.

The Tientsin-Pukow (which lay across the river from Nanking) was first bruited by German interests in 1899. After fits and starts and a couple of wars, the German concession was revived in 1908. At this point the Chinese government was able to insist on relatively favorable terms. The 674-mile line did not open to through traffic until 1912 and consisted of the German-built Northern section and the British-built Southern portion.
