Data from "Atlantic-Type Express Locomotive for the Chinese Government Railways", Engineering (30 August 1912), p. 223 and "Chinese Government Rys, Atlantic Type Express Locomotive," Locomotive Magazine, Volume 18, No 241 (14 September 1912), p.179.
Said by OS Nock (RWC IV, pl 107) to have been among the ten most handsome locomotive designs ever exported from Great Britain, these Belpaire-boilered express engines are a matter of taste, one supposes. The boiler is pitched high, with a lot of air showing above the splashers, the capped stack and small cylinders seem undersized, and a Belpaire firebox never conferred smooth lines on a boiler. Still, the large piston valves inside simplified the look and the engines reportedly ran freely on the Taokow-Chingua line.
