Hangchow-Kiangshan 4-8-0 Locomotives in China

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class unknown (Locobase 20927)

Data from D[ennis] Rock Carling, 4-8-0 Tender Locomotives (New York: Drake Publishers, Inc, 1972), pp. 92 and "Asia", Table XV [15], entry 280, pp. 108-109.

Very few 4-8-0s operated in China. In fact, given the comprehensiveness of Carling's survey, it's likely these are the only ones originally built for a Chinese railway.

Limitations imposed by a lightly built railway constrained Hunslet's search for power. The builder apparently decided that upping the boiler pressure considerably would compensate. Since Carling reported that the first six were satisfactory enough to merit buying another four in 1936, they appear to have been right. "An unusual feature," he added," was the fitting of two couplers at different heights."

Note: Superheater area is taken from Carling's table. It seems quite high for the size of the boiler, but Locobase has no other source for that figure.
