Colombian National Rwy 2-8-8-2 Locomotives in Colombia

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 57 (Locobase 2499)

See also Robert Tufnell, The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Railway Locomotives (London: Quarto Publishing Ltd, 1986). (Thanks to Philip Bushdiecker for his 6 January 2021 for correcting a valve gear error.)

Articulated engines of the Kitson-Meyer type resemble Fairlies, but have only one firebox and boiler; the firebox is between the engine sets. This particular type had long water tanks flanking the boiler and very small drivers for substantial tractive effort. So small were the drivers, in fact, that prominent counterbalances had to be carried on the outside for clearance reasons. Tonnage rating was 330 tons at 9-10 mph up a 4.5% grade between Giradot and Bogota. Tufnell notes also that the line ascended in a ruling grade of 4% to reach 9,088 ft from sea level in 82.5 miles. And the curves had radii as low as 260 ft.

They were quite successful and ran until 1959.
