Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 201 (Locobase 15020)

Data from Roy V Wright (Ed.) 1922 Locomotive Cyclopedia of American Practice, Sixth Edition (New York: Simmons-Boardman Publishing Company, 1922), 1012. Works numbers were 5993-5997 in June 1917, 5998-6004 in July, 6005-6009 in August, 6010-6012 in September, 6013-6016 in October.

Like many other African locomotives of the time, this class of Mikados burned wood. This was a big order of relatively large locomotives for this small Pittsburgh builder and were delivered just as the difficult task of building the railway was being complete. They ran on 60 lb/yard (30 kg/metre) rail laid on steel sleepers (ties). It took eight years to build the 450 miles (725 km) of road from the Zambian border to Port Francqui (later Ilepo).
