Margarita & Teresa Plantation Railroad 2-4-2 Locomotives in Cuba

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Margarita y Teresa (Locobase 5838)

Data from "New Locomotives from the Rogers Locomotive Works", American Engineer and Railroad Journal, Vol LXIX, No 2 (February 1895), pp. 83-84.

The brief accompanying text describes this locomotive as a "double-ender plantation engine" with a Belpaire firebox. The photo shows that the firebox's square shoulders were almost completely contained by the large wooden cab. Tall, relatively slender steam and sand domes stood behind the bell, stack, and large headlight along the boiler.

The little sugar road on which this locomotive operated ran for 2.2 miles (3.5 km) on relatively substantial 60 lb/yard (30 kg/metre) rail. The lone M&T moved United Railways of Habana cars from the junction to the mill and back.
