Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Alfonso XIII (Locobase 12262)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volume 21, p.144. Works numbers were 15776-15778 in March 1898.

The Spanish Corps of Military Engineers bought this trio of Moguls and appropriately specified royal names: Alfonso XIII (then King), Maria Cristina (his queen), and Princesa Mercedes.

They were intended for the Cauto Railway in Cuba. Specs called for a 70-ton trailing load on 2% grades and the ability to negotiate 75-100-metre curves. On the level, one of these blue-bloods was to haul 450 tons.
