Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 6 (Locobase 14916)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volume 64, p. 329. Works number was 53813 in October 1920.

Compared to the much more common plantation Moguls and Consolidations then being procured for Cuban sugar processors, this oil-burning Prairie had a shorter adhesion wheelbase than most, but a longer engine wheelbase under a longer boiler. The firebox area actually shrank a little compared to the 219-tube Moguls while adhesion weight changed very little. Taken altogether, the design suggests a desire for more readily available steam than the 2-6-0 could supply and a need to run bi-directionally.
