FC del Norte de Cuba 2-8-0 Locomotives in Cuba

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 47 (Locobase 14427)

Data from DeGolyer, Vol 74, pp. 378. Works numbers were 52480-52481, 52536-52538 in November 1919.

Using the same boiler and firebox as the superheated Ten-wheeler design delivered in the previous year, the Norte ordered a new wheel arrangement that put more adhesive weight on the rails and reduced driver diameter by 6" (152 mm). The result decreased axle loading and restricted the engine's wheelbase to that of the earlier engines. Like the 4-6-0s, the 2-8-0s used 9 1/2" (241 mm) piston valves to supply steam to the cylinders.

48 eventually bore the name of the Central Carlos Manuel de Cespedes and was still "in existence" in 1995.
