Manati Sugar Company 2-8-2 Locomotives in Cuba

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 24 (Locobase 14443)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volume 64, p. 357.. Works numbers were 52295-52296 in September 1919.

These Mikados were duplicates of the narrow-gauge plantation Consolidations procured from Baldwin earlier in the decade (Locobases 14022 and 14439). The addition of a trailing axle may have been adopted to improve bi-directional running as there was little increase in adhesive weight and no change in either boiler and firebox dimensions or in power dimensions. The 2-8-2s were delivered as oil burners (as opposed to the coal fuel used in the 2-8-0s) and the tenders were little bigger and plumbed to carry heavy Tampico oil.
