Norte 2-8-2 Locomotives in Cuba

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 360 (Locobase 15358)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Vol 78, pp. 79+. Works numbers were 58788-58790 in October 1925.

The other half of a six-locomotive batch bought by Consolidated Railways of Cuba in 1925; see Locobase 15357 for the Cuba Railway set. The later trio of superheated oil-burning Mikados served the Norte Railway.

They were substantial engines with big boilers, adequate superheat, and 12" (305 mm) piston valves. The specs say that both engine and tender were "to built in accordance with railway company's drawings covering existing Mikado locomotives on this road." [These had been built by Alco.] "Where prints differ from specification, follow the prints ...BLW to furnish railway company three blue prints each of any parts that may be in variance with the original set of Alco prints."
