Banes Railroad 2-8-2 Locomotives in Cuba

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 26 (Locobase 15058)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volume 66, pp. 27+ and Volume 79, pp. 34+. Works numbers were 55801 in November 1922 and 60066-60067 in June 1927.

These superheated oil-burning sugar Mikados were ordered for the 3-foot (914 mm) gauge, but the engines were converted to the standard gauge by Baldwin's Extra Work Department before delivery. 8" (203 mm) piston valves admitted steam to the cylinders. According to the specs, the front sand box was moved toward the smokebox to allow locating the bell between the sand box and the dome. The rear sand box was moved back further to straighten the sand pipes.
