Czech State Rwy 2-6-4 Locomotives in Czechoslovakia

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 353.1 (Locobase 1641)

Data from A[nthony] E[dward] Durrant, The Steam Locomotives of Eastern Europe (Newton Abbot:David & Charles, 1966), amended and supplemented by Google translation of Czech Atlas website at [link], last accessed 20 October 2011.

Ludvfk Schejbal made over several of the ex-Austrian 229 tank engines as they represented the largest class of passenger tanks in the new Czechoslovakia. His remake of this class required a strict adherence to a 14 metric tonne axle loading, so he added a second axle under the bunker to spread the weight.

Of all of the conversions, this quintet saw the longest service. The first withdrawal came in 1957 and the last in 1961.
