Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Hs (II) (Locobase 4009)

Data from William Bay, Danmarks Damplokomotiver (1977). Class information from [link].

Several builders contributed to this large class of small tank shunters (switchers, Rangerlokomotiv).

Neilson of Glasgow delivered 7 in 1894 (works numbers 4747-4753)

Hartmann supplied the next 7 in 1895 (works 2110-2116)

followed by Maffei delivering 8 in 1898 (works 1896-1903)

Italy's Breda produced two batches: 6 in 1899 (works 409-414) and 6 in 1900 (461-466)

Denmark's own Hnttemeier's first 2 locomotives were Hs in 1900

England's Vulcan (or Maribo, according to Gregersen's Damploko) delivered 2 in 1901 (works 5-6),

Henschel closed out the series in 1902 with the last 7 (works 5986-5992).

Like many Danish locomotives using Stephenson link motion, this class had the valve gear mounted outside of the drivers. It differed from the earlier Hs class (362-377) in having a steam dome set farther back on the boiler and over the gap between the two axles.

A few were retired before World War Two, but most continued to serve until the 1950s and early 1960s and at least one carried on until 1972. Hs 385 was retired in 1967 and sold to Middleton Railway in Leeds in 1972 and later operated in Surrey from 1985 to 1999.
