Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Partenope (Locobase 14489)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Vol 54, p. 230 and 232; Vol 63, pp. 282+; Vol 78, pp. 119+.. Works numbers were 41825 in December 1914 and 43395-43396 in May 1916, 48950 in June 1918, 55035 in September 1921, and 58591-58592 in August 1925.

Tiny by all measures, the Partenope was even so an enlargement of the first two outside-frame, wood-burning plantation Moguls delivered in 1906 (Locobase 14770) for this Porcella, Vicini & Companies sugar road. Tightest curve radius was 100 feet (30.5 metres). Like all of Santiago Porcella's locomotives, these engines bore Italian place names. After Partenope in 1914 came two islands--Sicilia and Sardena- in 1916, and Verona in 1918.

For some reason, but not unusually, the Verona weighed more than her essentially identical older sisters. Adhesion weight rose to 23,000 lb (10,433 kg) and engine weight climbed to 27,000 lb (12,447 kg). The second #1--Italia-was produced in November 1921, and the Fiume and the Padova arrived in 1925; these were still heavier at 25,000 lb (11,340 kg) adhesion and 28,000 lb (12,700 kg) for the engine.

All were fitted with broad stacks, the earlier engines sporting the funnel-shaped Radley & Hunter and the 1921 and 1925 locomotives using the Rushton Improved cabbage stack.

Class Piemonte (Locobase 14770)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Vol 28, p. 298. Works numbers were 28645-28646 in July 1906.

These were the first two outside-frame, wood-burning plantation Moguls delivered to the Porcella, Vicini & Company's Ingenio Italia. They were by any measure tiny locomotives named, as were all of Porcella's engines, for Italian places (in this case, two provinces).

NB: Locobase estimates the firebox heating surface by comparing the dimensions of the two very similar engines bought for the Ingenio Italia. The later ones were larger in most dimensions (Locobasd 14489), but had the same cylinder volume and driver diameters.
