Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class La Borda (Locobase 14479)

Data from DeGolyer, Vol 54, p. 243. Works number was 45935 in July 1917.

Locobase can't say for sure if this was the first Type E superheater to be installed, but it must have one of the earliest. The double-loop superheater served a little plantation Mogul and its separate specification within the Baldwin spec shows that only two of the tubes in the boiler were as small as 2" (50.8 mm) diameter. Six more tubes measured 3" (76.2 mm) and the 24 flues that held the twelve double-looped elements had the same diameter.

The firebox burned anthracite coal and the smokebox was topped by a cabbage stack. Six inch (254 mm) piston valves admitted the steam to the cylinders.

At the time of La Borda's arrival in Santo Domingo District, the San Jose, while still one of the smallest plantations in the DR, was expected to grow considerably in the next couple of years. It offered what must have seemed impossibly tight curve radii of 85 feet/25.9 metres.
