Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Cibao (Locobase 14775)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Vol 63, p. 299. Works number was 53144 in April 1920.

These plantation Prairies (the 19 being named Anacaona) appear to have been relatively straightforward lengthenings of the Baldwin compound Moguls supplied to the CD in 1899 (Locobase 12347). The boiler had a bit more heating surface area, but the firebox area remained about the same. It was shallower, however, and featured more grate area. The driving wheelbase was unchanged as was the adhesion weight. There were a few changes aside from the added trailing truck. outside constant-lead radial valve gear now actuated 6" (152 mm) piston valves. The tender was bigger as well.

The road used 45 lb/yard (22.5 kg/metre) rail, presented 3% maximum grades, and relatively tight curve radii of 182 feet (55.5 metres). The specification required the locomotives' centers of gravity to be "as low as possible."
