Class 231 (Locobase 9974)

Data from JP Crozet's Franco-Ethiopian Railway site, [link], last accessed on 21 February 2009. (Thanks to Teemu Koivumaki for his 14 April 2023 email supplying a wealth of detail on the class's provenance.) Works numbers were 1270-1275 in 1915

Teemu Koivumaki wrote Locobase "Originally. this type [was] built [for] the Madrid a Aragon 101-106 in 1915, but never delivered and [were] stored in the works of Haine st Pierre."

They lingered on the fast track for years before new buyers apeared. According to Koivumaki, Four of of the six were sold to Brazil. . Works 1270-1272 landed on the R.V. Sul Mineira (RSM) as their 260-262 and.1275 to the E.F. Sorocabana taking number 300.

CFE found in 1936 one of these locomotives (either no.1273 or 1274) and ordered in 1936 three similar engines (CFE.232-234) (Factory no. 1780-1782/1936)

Straight-back ("Crampton") boiler with Kylchap stack and nozzle in the smokebox.. A compact Pacific that served the CFE for decades. 231 was delivered in 1936; the other 3 followed in 1938.

One photo on Crozet's website shows that 233 (at least) had been fitted with smoke lifter "elephant ears) and a sloped cover over the steps on either side of the smokebox.
