C.F. Franco Ethiopien Beyer-Garratt Locomotives in Ethiopia

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 501 (Locobase 506)

Data from JP Crozet's Franco-Ethiopian Railway site, [link], last accessed on 21 February 2009. Ansaldo works numbers 1371-1376.

These are the only Garratts Ansaldo built. Its exhaust stack was a Kylchap.

The tube heating surface area calculated from the inside diameters of 45 mm (1.77") for the tubes and 126 mm (4.96") for the flues was 1,277 sq ft (118.65 sq m) and a total heating surface area of 1,442 sq ft (134 sq m). That is the figure given in the source's diagram. Locobase's entry uses the outside diameters

The Ethiopian railways on which they ran were overseen by the Italian government, which had invaded Ethiopia in 1935. Only the first three in the Ansaldo order actually arrived in Ethiopia and, while they weren't as popular as the Mallets running in that country, they did carry on until 1959.
