Suomen valtionrautatiet 0-4-0 Locomotives in Finland

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class E1 (Locobase 5615)

Data from Markku Karvonen's personal.inet.fi/koti/markku.karvonen/prk/vanha3.htm (visited 29 March 2003). and Eljas Polho- Pekka Honkanen, Hoyryveturit Valtionrautateilla (The Steam Locomotives of the Finnish State Railways), Suomen Rautatiehistoriallinen Seura Ry (Finnish Railway History Society) 1967-2017, p. 215. Publishing information supplied by Teemu Koivumaki in a 24 January 2022 email as part of an indispensable series of emails concerning Finnish locomotives. Works numbers were 73-74 in 1875.

Carels was a Belgian locomotive builder about whom Locobase knows very little.

Class Vk4 - Leena (Locobase 5646)

Data from Markku Karvonen's personal.inet.fi/koti/markku.karvonen/prk/vanha3.htm (visited 29 March 2003).

Karvonen didn't give the cylinder dimensions, although he does supply the tractive effort. At the time of the first draft over a decade earlier, Locobase could only say "Locobase's Finnish is severely limited, but it appears that this was an industrial locomotive for the Peitersaaren Selluloosa OY". Or so Locobase thought when he first wrote this entry more than a decade ago.

So many thanks are due to three Finnish contacts: To Antero Kuusi for his 11 November 2015 email outlining the Vk4's career. Locobase found Tiina Lehtinen's name as point of contact for the Finnish Transportation Museum group and sent an email asking for more details. This inquiry produced Iiro Niemi, Conservator at the Finnish Railway Museum, who replied very quickly in a 17 November 2015 email and attached a copy of two pages (160-161) from a Finnish-German book that contained data in both languages (my locomotive terms German is much better than my locomotive terms Finnish.)

Antero Kuusi emailed Locobase the following on 11 November 2015: "The train was used as industrial engine by Pietarsaari pulp factory (Pietarsaaren selluloosa OY) until 1945 after which it was sold to VR (State Railways) that used is as shunting engine at its Kuopio Depot."

Iiro Niemi added that Leena was overhauled in 2009 and pulls museum trains every summer.
