Suomen Valtion 0-4-4 Locomotives in Finland

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class F1/Vk6 (Locobase 20979)

Data from data table entry "F1, Vk 6 Pyorasto 0-4-4-T" supplied byTeemu Koivumaki in a 20 January 2022 email that supplied much of the detail in this entry. See also "Finnish Steam Locomotive Class F1" in Wikipedia at [link], last accessed 23 January 2022. Works numbers were 409, 408 in 1885, 434-435 in 1886.

The Swiss builder supplied eight Forney-type tank locomotives to three different Finnish railways. These were the only 0-4-4Ts to enter Finnish service. Wikipedia gives a short history of these useful engines, which were "a class of tank locomotives, which did not have to be turned at terminal stations." Their first employment were "in Helsinki, Tampere, Turku and Viipuri for local traffic, which they could easily handle." Once traffic grew beyond the design's modest abilities, the locomotives proved "well-suited" to moving " lightweight mixed trains short distances."

After 40 years, a renumbering, and new class designation (Vk6), the State Railway placed the 116 out of service in May 1926. 132 followed in April 1930, 133 in June 1934, and 115 in September 1934.

226 was preserved by its donation to the Finnish Railway Museum in HyvinkSS, Finland
