Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Negative 13269 offered for sale with views, last accessed 12 February 2012. Baldwin built the first 10 (works numbers were 73227-73235 in 1946) and Alco-Schenectady completed the order in 1947.
Of the thousands of Decapods that were ordered by the Russian government and the Soviet government 25 years later, this set of 20 was diverted to Finland in 1946-1947 as US-Soviet relations deteriorated. A noticeable detail difference was the provision of a larger sandbox than those typically found on Soviet engines.
Known as "Trumans", the class served the VR for 25 years. They were powerful, low-speed engines that were rated at 65 km/h (40 mph)
