Class 3 (Locobase 12398)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volume 22, p. 242. See also the Jokionen Museum Railway site at [link] . Works number was 17346 in January 1900.

Sized for the light rail and tight clearances of a narrow-gauge railway, this 8-coupled had leading and trailing trucks to enable to traverse 100-metre-radius curves, operate on 30-lb/yard (15-kg/metre) rail, scale 1.6% grades, and cover the line's 100 km (62 miles).

A note in the specs reports that the tanks' capacity was reduced from 1,000 gallons to bring the engine weight down from 67,955 lb to 64,308 lb. "Pay special attention," the Baldwin rep added, "that actual weight does not exceed this."

Ultimately it didn't matter - the locomotive was still too heavy. So the 3 was sold off to Estonia (then in Russia) where it served the enormous fortress complex at Reval.
