Loire 0-4-0 Locomotives in France

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Samson (Locobase 592)

Data from See also Gustav Reder (Michael Reynolds, trans), The world of steam locomotives (New York: Putnam, 1974).

The first of several dozen "Samsons" built for the Loire railroad (an amalgamation of the Saint Etienne-Lyons and Andrezieux-Roanne Railroads). Most of them were built in France by Schneider and Creusot-Loire. Papin modified Samson locomotives to place the cylinders under the boiler driving forward to turn a crank to which the connecting rods were attached. It was eventually given an additional carrying axle at the rear (making it an 0-4-2).
