This cross-compound design duplicates most of the other dimensions of the simple-expansion six-coupled shown in Locobase 15502. Even so, Tyas contends that the class were "of an entirely new design for these railways."
Although still following the Bourbonnais type of goods engine, these locomotives were set up as cross compounds, the boilers were straight Crampton type with a dome placed well forward, and the sand box was moved to the footplate. A photo shows a quite gangly version of Walschaert's gear. The eccentric rods from the axle were quite short with "extremely long" radius rods.
To allow the engineer to send steam to the LP cylinder when the HP ports were closed, the design used a mechanically worked intercepting valve. The setup may have represented the first use of an intercepting valve and to Tyas, the whole arrangement was "unique and the writer does not recollect ever seeing it before."
Tube diameter is the interior measurement. External tube diameter was 50 mm (1.97").
