Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class unknown (Locobase 9146)

Data from A. Sampite, Les Chemins de Fer a Faible Trafic en France (Paris: Baudry et Cie, 1888), p. 49. See also [link] for a history of these Freycinet Plan railways.

This Reseau d'Interet Local comprised 3 railways of which that of the Lyon a Saint-Genix-Aoste was by far the longest at 72 km (45 mi). The Sablonniere a Montalieu measured a mere 18 km and the Montalieu a Amblagnieu ran only 3 km.

Sampite notes the large grate in the Belpaire firebox and comments that it was intended to burn charcoal briquettes. The small drivers, he adds, limited maximum speeds to 50-53 km/h (31-31 1/2 mph), which was nonetheless speedy for such Feycinet Law railways. He also reported that these engines were giving excellent service.

The lines themselves, although built with 30-kg/metre (60-lb/yd) rail, were constructed to allow 70 km/h (43 mph) running. At the time of writing in 1888, Sampite reported that the railway was procuring new locomotives with 1,800-mm (70.9") drivers.
