As delivered, this class developed 12,250 lb of tractive effort. After the French Canal Company that bought these little tanks went bust, the locomotives remained behind at the site. When the US effort to build the canal began, these tanks were acquired from the French company in 1904 and converted to the 5-foot gauge.
When construction ended, many of the now-worn-out engines were dumped into the newly dug Lake Gatun
