Grand Central/PLM 2-4-0 Locomotives in France

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 1/701/834/3 366 (Locobase 13423)

Data from the PLM Wiki vault crammed with data and plans at [link], last accessed 12 November 2011. The plan comes from the 1869 PLM plan book collected by Roland Sermet.

Originally built to the same specifications (or very nearly) as a host of 2-4-0s shown in in many of the Locobase entries between 13407-13424, this class's detailed specifications come from the 1910 PLM diagram book.

In the period between 1856, when this class first arrived on the Grand Central, and 1910, the engines gave up their domeless boiler in favor of a large dome over the leading carrying axle and, later, slightly larger-diameter drivers. While the boiler was a bit smaller (although fitted with longer tubes), the locomotives' adhesion weight increased considerably.

Retirements occurred over the 1910-1928 period, a mark of how valuable these local mixed-traffic locomotives continued to be.
