Built for the 20.3-km line, this engine was intended to scale the grade that ran 3.2 km between Cernay and Old Thann (Vieux Thann). Perhaps of greater interest at the time was its trip downgrade at up to 70 km/h (43 mph). Not bad for a low-drivered coupled engine in 1839.

Over the next several years, the Ville de Thann enjoyed a make over with new 380 x 520 mm cylinders, a boiler with 30 more sq metres of heating surface area, and ,ultimately, a rise in boiler pressure to 6 atmospheres. The pressure upgrade came in 1853, which was the same year that the Chemins de Fer de l'Est took over the Mulhouse and the Thann.
