Class 58 (Locobase 7375)

Data from Titre Exposition universelle internationale de 1878 a Paris. Rapports du jury internationale..Volume Groupe VI - Classe 64. Rapport sur le materiel des chemins de fer. p. 50 (cnum.cnam.fr/CGI/fpage.cgi?8XAE277-11.1/54/100/312/0/0 (accessed 1 September 2005) table and page 91.

The Jury's report explains that this little locomotive was designed for "service de pilotage" , which either refers to an engine sent out ahead of trains to assure the safety of the line or one that couples to a road engine for helper service. In any case, the sole difference between the locomotive displayed and those suburban locomotives already in service on the Ouest (most likely the 2-4-0T Bicyclettes, Locobase 6048), according to the Jury, was the addition of a 4th axle to allow a larger bunker and thus longer runs between refuellings.
