Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 3801 (Locobase 6063)

Data from I N Jevica's [link] (visited 29 May 2004) and Railway Engineer, October 1908, p 315.

A sturdy-looking tank with widely spaced axles, Belpaire firebox, dome over the first axle, small sand dome, cab with rounded roof, and trailing axle under the footplate. (Thus, not really a "Prairie" tank, since the Prairie's trailing axle usually supported the firebox.)

Already representing something of a departure in its combination of wheel arrangement and compounding, this class further differed in the cylinder layout. The HP cylinders rode inside the frame, the LP outside and all four rested side-by-side. Each cylinder had its own valve gear, the HP gear actuating piston valves, the LP operating slide valves. Like many French locomotives, these were fitted with large-diameter Serve tubes.
