Piston valves measured 10" (254 mm ) in diameter. See Locobase 431 for the description of this very large class built by Baldwin to a single design for service in France.

Class 4 071/140 A (Locobase 20589)

Data from "140 Est 4003 a 4175" in Wikipedia at [link], last accessed 5 July 2019. Epernay produced 25; Fives-Lille, Henschel & Sohn, and SACM, 20 each; and ANF 15.

Locobase 4198 shows the first few batches of this compound Consolidation. Beginning in 1911, the Est updated the design in several ways, the principal change being the addition of a superheater. Both cylinder diameters grew and overall cylinder volume increased by 10%. The cylinders were fitted with Adams piston valves.

The first 21 trailed the tenders used in the non-superheated predecessors, but from 4091 on, all used the larger tenders shown in the specs.

Wikipedia summarized the class's value by noting they were designed to haul the heavy trains that served the Lorraine region and became the Est's standard heavy 2-8-0 freight locomotive". Their tonnage ratings included 1,200-1,500 metric tons (1,320-1,650 short tons) at 40-45 kph (25-28 mph) on an "easy grade" and 340 metric tons (370 short tons) up a 2-2 1/4% grade at 20 kph (12 mph). They could hit 75 kph (47 mph) as a maximum.

Assigned to depots all over Eastern France (Nancy, Bar-le-Duc, Belfort, Chalons, Nancy, Reims, Saint-Dizier, Troyes, Saint-Dizier and Vesoul, all of the class survived to be redesignated 140 A under the new SNCF.

Some were rebuilt according to Andre Chapelon's recommendations, which include a 6-jet exhaust nozzle, smoke deflectors, and enlarged steam passengers. These were designated 140 Cs.

All were withdrawn in the early 1950s.

Class 4000 (Locobase 9958)

Data from Institution of Mechanical Engineers (March 1904), p. 365.

These two prototypes were virtually identical to the Midi's 4000 class (Locobase 6061). As with many French locomotives of the time, these were relatively large and powerful engines on the Continent for their wheel arrangements, considerably bigger than their British counterparts. Serve internally finned tubes increased boiler heating surface considerably. Their Belpaire fireboxes were rather small by comparison.

The class entered production as the 4003s described in Locobase 4198.

Class 4003/140 A (Locobase 4198)

See also Charles Lake, "The Locomotives of the Eastern Railway of France", Railroad Gazette, Volume 45, Nos 3-4 (19 June 1926, 26 June 1926), pp. 185-191, 390-394.

After the Est had sampled the advantages of the two prototype locomotives described in Locobase 9958, they built dozens more to this design. Charles Lake described these engines as having a different compound setup than most Est engines, with the HP cylinders inside driving a cranked second axle and the LP cylinders outside and turning the third axle. A half-tone shows them to have been high-boilered with Belpaire fireboxes and burly with three domes and a regulator box.

Two bundles of tubes collected the HP exhaust, letting it flow into two collectors in the smokebox. A decidedly low-pressure set up, it was credited with increasing steam temperature 15 deg C (59 deg F) and improving economy 4%.

4003-4017 came from Epernay (works numbers 510-524 in 1905) and were identical to the prototypes.

4018-4070 repeated the first batch externally, but had some internal changes in steam passages.

100 more locomotives were delivered in 1911 with superheaters. These appear in Locobase.
