Piston valves measured 10" (254 mm ) in diameter. See Locobase 431 for the description of this very large class built by Baldwin to a single design for service in France.

Class 4000 (Locobase 9427)

Data from Maurice Demoulin, Locomotive Actuelle ... (Paris: Librairie Polytechnique Ch.Beranger, 1906), p 258

Very similar to the Orleans 5000 class (Locobase 6061), these four-cylinder compound preceded them into service by three years. Ahead of the Belpaire firebox was a single steam dome (over the second driving axle) flanked by two sand domes (cylinders, actually). A good balance of power and speed from the dimensions at least. LP cylinders rode outside the frame and drove the third coupled axle, the HP cylinders lying inside and turning the second coupled axle.

According to Demoulin, the class served the Beziers to Neussargues section which had curves with minimum radii of 300 metres and a ruling grade covering 14.7 km (9 mi) at 3 1/3%. Up that grade, the 4000 class was rated at 210 trailing tonnes, which was 80 tonnes greater than the drag managed by the 2000-class 0-8-0s.

Class 4101/140 H (Locobase 15481)

Data from "Locomotives for French Railways," Railway Mechanical Engineer, Vol 92, No 3 (March 1918), pp. 136-. Works numbers were 58023-58062 in 1917

Compared to the Baldwin Pershings built beginning in the same year earlier (Locobase 431), this engine had a much more European look with a high-pitched boiler and smaller cab. Piston valves measured 10 1/4" (160 mm) in diameter.

"Des Surnoms Pour La Vapeur," Rail Magazine, No 7 (November 1977), p.13, says that the wagon-top boiler led to their being nicknamed Bossues ("battered", possibly in the meaning of sloped) and "Dos de Chameau" (camel back). Locobase thinks either nickname would have better fitted a Belpaire-firebox design.

They were later designated 140H by the SNCF.
