Class 5001/140 B (Locobase 6062)

Data from I N Jevica's [] (visited 29 May 2004); and "140 nbr 5,001a 5,027 du PO" and 140 nbr 5,028 a 5,152" from the WikiPO website at [];_5_028_à_5_152_du_PO, last accessed 26 October 2024. (Thanks to Alexander Blessing for his 15 October 2024 email noting the WikiPO website and reporting some of the data.). Blessing pointed out the several builders and WikiPO gave the details:

5 001 à 5 012 : Société Alsacienne (SACM), works numbers were 5426-5437 in 1904,

5 013 à 5 027 : Schneider, works numbers were 2832-2846 in 1905-1906,

5 028 à 5 052 : Fives-Lille, Works numbers were 3397-3446 in 1907-1908,

5 078 à 5 102 : Borsig, works numbers were 6514-6538 in 1908,

5 103 à 5 127 : Fives-Lille, works numbers were 3452-3476 in 1908-1909

This was a powerful freight-hauler class that was built over a six-year period. Ahead of the Belpaire firebox was a single steam dome (over the second driving axle) flanked by two sand domes (cylinders, actually). The boiler contained Serve internally finned tubes.

A good balance of power and speed from the dimensions at least. Like the Midi 4000 class, the Orleans engines had their LP cylinders outside and driving the third coupled axle, the HP cylinders inside and turning the second coupled axle.

These engines were rated at 250 tonnes up a 0.25% grade at 20 km/h (15 1/2 mph), but their relatively tall drivers permitted 400 tonnes at 75 km/h (47 mph) up 0.1%.

All of the class came under the SNCF upon the national railway's founding in 1938. It wasn't until 1955 that the engines gave way to diesels.
