Classes 32 (Tome I), part of the series of Rapports du Jury Internationale of the Exposition Unverselle Internationale de 1900 Paris Exposition, hosted on the website of Le Conservatoire numTrique des Arts & MTtiers ([], Accessed 21 August 2005). This locomotive was Alsacienne works # 4664. (See also Demoulin 1898 pp. 123-125 and Railway Engineer 1899, p. 277). The large-diameter boiler tubes were of the Serve design with internal fins. The illustration shows the Belpaire firebox and dome over the leading driving axle. The design, provided as one of two engines of different layouts, used du Bousquet's particular variant of the de Glehn system in which the LP cylinders drove the first coupled axle and the HP cylinders turned the middle coupled axle.
According to the Jury report, the locomotive showed itself able to scale a 3.2% grade at 30 km/h (18 mph) pulling a 125-tonne load while a 160-tonne load moved up a 1.5% incline at 55 km/h (34 mph). On the level between Bordeaux and Cette, 1301 hauled 650-700 tonnes at 40 km/h (25 mph). In another test, 1301 filled in on the Toulouse-Cette express and took 300 tonnes up to 65-70 km/h (40-43 mph) and 200 tonnes to 75-80 km/h (47-50 mph).
This turned out to be the prototype of a 70-locomotive class that shared duties with the similar 1601-series (which had 1,650-mm/65" drivers). The 1301's primary service was the line between Toulouse and Bayonne.

Schneider produced 1303-1312 in 1898-1899 and 1331-1350 in 1903. Between those batches, SACM turned out the 1313-1330 in 1902. Fives-Lille delivered the last twenty in 1909-1910. See also 1312-1330 were built by SACM in Grafenstaden in 1902 while Schneider at Le Creusot added 1331-1360 in 1902-1903.
Production examples of the earlier 1301-1302 (Locobase 6807), these were a bit heavier and had a larger firebox. As in the first two, the tubes' 70 mm diameter reveal that these were Serve tubes, which had eight 1/8" (3.175 mm)internal ribs that increased their nominal heating surface area. All had the Belpaire boiler and relatively stubby profile that suffered from the stolid presence of a pair of cubic sandboxes flanking the relatively small dome.

Built in the same year as Midi's 1301-1302 (Locobase , this was the freight version with smaller drivers. Like the 1301, the design was produced in series later in the decade. All had the Belpaire boiler and relatively stubby profile.

Just as the 1301-1302 provided the test engines for a relatively numerous class of 1,700-mm drivered' compound Ten wheelers, this class followed the trial horse described in Locobase 3916. All had the Belpaire boiler and firebox and relatively stubby profile. The February 1900 report noted that an intermediate reservoir (which holds the exhausted steam from the HP cylinders until the LP cylinder ports open) had a 7.95 cu ft (130 cc) capacity.
Like many French locomotives of the time, the boiler was fitted with Serve tubes, each of which had eight small fins lining the inside of the tube. The evaporative heating surface shown accounts for the surface area added by the fins.

This design is almost certainly the smooth-tube variant of the 3700 shown in Locobase 6807.
