One wonders if these might have been built as tank locomotives anywhere else. Although they had just 4 coupled wheels under the frame, the axles were relatively widespread and the drivers taller than usual. As a result they were rated at 110 tons up a 1 1/4% grade at 45 kph (28 mph) and a maximum of 63 kph (39 mph) -- such numbers were adequate for all kinds of mixed-traffic requirements in the 1860s and 1870s.

The first group of 24 (1866-67) from Grafenstaden (and Kessler's 12 from 1867-67)) had Crampton boilers, double bar frames and inside Stephenson valve gear driven from the outside cylinders by cranks. The dozen 1870 Grafenstadens had Belpaire fireboxes and a plate frame.

All were converted to 0-4-2T tank engines in 1880 and redesignated IV A. The frame was extended to the rear and coal bunkers holding 1.5 metric tons (1.65 short tons) and water tanks holding 3,800 liters (1,004 US gallons) added. But apparently the weight shift rearward was too dramatic and the front axle tended to derail, so the class was retired before 1900.
