"Ronchamp" refers to a large coal-mining company in the Haute-Saone near the Swiss border. Its reserves consisted mainly of "charbon", a grade of coal with a carbon percentage between anthracite (the highest at between 93 and 97%) and lignite (50-60% carbon).
