Mansfelder BergwerksBahn 0-8-0 Locomotives in Germany

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class K44.9 (Locobase 13806)

Data from the [link] datasheet, last accessed 31 January 2012. Works numbers were 12347-12

The engines were delivered to the complex of rail lines connecting the 13 mines, 6 smelters, and 2 transfer stations. Like other narrow-gauge lines in Germany, the MBB used "rollwagens" to carry standard-gauge freight cars on a platform rolling on trucks that ran on the 750-mm gauge line. At the transfer stations, these cars would roll off the rollwagen and onto their own wheels.

Note the square cylinder dimensions. The datasheet illustration shows a big, burly narrow-gauge engine.

The 7 was sold to the Rugener, but the others remained in service throughout World War II, transferred their flag to East Germany, and continued working for decades.
