These singles set the trailing auxiliary axles behind the firebox and the driver and leading axles ahead. Axle compensations took two forms. The trailing axle was balanced tranversely while the driving and leading axles responded to longitudinal balancing. Perdonnet noted that this achieved the "milking stool", three-point stability desired by locomotive designers.
