Berlin-Hanover 2-4-0 Locomotives in Germany

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class unknown (Locobase 20233)

Data from Ed. Gobert, "German [44284], English Mechanic and World of Science, Volume 33, No 855 (12 August 1881), p. 553.

Locobase can't tie this locomotive to a particular class. English Mechanic's Nottingham-based correspondent cited a report on the locomotive exhibits at the 1878 Paris Exposition, but noted that this particular engine was not exhibited. He noted that they worked the Berlin and Hannover expresses.

Design details included a Belpaire firebox and, unusually for "the general practice of German loco. [sic] engineers of putting the frames outside the wheels, they are here placed inside."

They were used to draw "the fastest trains of the German Empire (excepting the Coln [sic]-Minden line" in trains of first-class carriages and traveling the 159 miles (255 km) between Hanover and Berlin in 3 hours 39 minutes for a 70 kph (43.4 mph) average. 93 miles of the run rolled out without stopping.
