Hannover State 2-4-0 Locomotives in Germany

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Bismark (Locobase 13219)

Data from W H Maw and William Dredge, "Locomotives", Reports on the Vienna Universal Exhibition, Part II (London: George Eyre and William Spottiswoode, 1874), pp. 421-423.

Unlike some of the locomotives appearing at the 1873 Exhibition, this design was designed to serve modestly paced passenger trains. The specifications from Bergisch's locomotive superintendent Stambke required a 31-mph (50-kmh) speed up a 1 in 72 (1.35%) grade pulling a 140-ton train in the Upper Rhine region where the railroad ran. It was fitted with a Belpaire firebox. Maw and Dredge pronounced the engine as "altogether well-built and of a very serviceable type."

NB: Heating surface areas in the specifications are given in the original as derived from the water-side diameter of the tubes.
