These 12 bicycles (to borrow an anachronistic description applied to later 1B1s) were enlargements of the original Pfalzbahn passenger engines (Locobase 5757) with significant differences. In addition to adding a driving axle (and thus doubling adhesion), the boiler grew a little and was pressed to a higher degree. The smaller drivers meant a more mixed-service engine.

Three different builders -- Keáler (Karlsruhe), Maffei (Mnnchen) and Regnier Poncelet (Lnttich) -- supplied 4 locomotives each. They ran for a couple of decades at least with the first being retired in 1870, the last in 1880.


Class P 2 Camel (Locobase 5756)

Data from Christian Lindecke's website [] (visited 28 Nov 2003). This class actually comprised the first 6 and the last 16. The first six suffered from poor steaming which led to a redesign highlighted by lengthening the firetubes by 60 cm (23.6" - almost 2 feet), which enlarged the heating surface by 14.4 sq m (155 sq ft). . The tender was larger as well.

Thirty years later, the 15 rather small passenger engines that still operated were tentatively classed by the new DRG as BR 35.70, but they never actually saw service on the national railroad.
