Elsass-Lothringen 4-4-0 Locomotives in Germany

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class A18 / S 3 (Locobase 7916)

Data from diagram Loco: 129, Societe Alsacienne de Constructions Mecaniques from locomotive book supplied by Dany Machi up at [link] as

Diagrammes des machines SACM construites a GRAFENSTADEN (October 2007).

These four-cylinder de Glehn compounds were a bit bigger than the Prussian S5s of similar vintage. Their boilers had the larger-diameter, internally finned Serve tubes.

NB: The data in this entry came from a difficult-to-read diagram, but are believed to be accurate nonetheless.

Like the Prussian engines, however, they had a relatively short service life because the trains they hauled kept gaining weight.
