Wurttembergische 4-6-2 Locomotives in Germany

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class C/BR 18 125 (Locobase 6019)

Data from US Military Railway Service Equipment Data Book -- German Locomotives supplied from the extensive collection of Allen Stanley (March 2004); and "Baureihe 18.1 " in Albert Gieseler's Dampfmaschinen und Lokomotiven at [link], last accessed 21 October 2022. Works number of 3846-3852 in 1919, 3978-3981 in 1921.

It seems clear that a later batch of this classic Pacific first described in Locobase 5073 saw a slight adjustment in the tube & flue counts, which is shown in the different heating surface areas and a higher superheating ratio. Other than that difference and an increase of weight, the design appears to have been unchanged.

Class C/BR 18.101 (Locobase 5073)

Data from US Military Railway Service Equipment Data Book -- German Locomotives supplied from the extensive collection of Allen Stanley (March 2004); and [link], last accessed 21- October 2022. Works numbers from 3567-3572 in 1910, 3617-3620 in 1911; 3661-3665 in 1913; 3699-3702 in 1914.

Manfred Kopka concluded that this was one of the finest examples of German Pacific design. Although relatively small, it was considered efficient and economical and its profile both simple and elegant. The relatively level alignment of the main line allowed for tall drivers and a top speed of 120 km/h (75 mph). They demonstrated their power and speed in trials that saw one engine haul 400 tons up 10 km (6.2 miles) of 1% grade at an average speed of 70 km/h (43.5 mph). Another trial saw an engine average 90 km/h (56 mph) pulling 470 tons up 12 km (7.5 miles) of a ruling grade of 0.4%.

All but four of the class were taken into the DRG as 18.1 and the last of these locomotives stayed in service until 1955.
