Gera-Meuselwitz-Wuitzer Eisenbahn Articulated Locomotives in Germany

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 1 / BR 99.5711 (Locobase 11198)

Data from [],_6, last accessed 11 April 2010. Works numbers were 4797-4799 in 1901, 5107 in November 1902, 5839 in October 1905.

The Gera-Meuselwitz-Wuitzer Eisenbahn measured only 31.2 kilometres (19.3 miles) as it ran from Gera to Wuitz-Mumsdorf. It opened on 12 November 1901 and ran as a private railway until nationalized by the East German Deutsche Reichsbahn in 1949.

The Borsig Mallets that opened the road were relatively small tank locomotives.

(NB: Data from the sources included a tube heating surface area as measured from the internal (fire side) diameter. The resulting 45.05 sq m (485 sq ft), when added to the firebox heating surface area came to 49.4 sq m (532 sq ft). In the same data, the sources give the tube diameter as shown above, which is the external (water side) diameter. Locobase uses the external diameter to simplify comparison with other, non-Continental locomotives.)
