Gold Coast Railways 4-8-2 Locomotives in Ghana

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 221 (Locobase 20928)

Data from "Goods Engine and Tender for the Gold Coastl Railway", Vulcan Foundry Locomotive Catalogue, No. 39 found on Flicker's Historical Locomotive Images website at [link]. (Many thanks to Jorge Cerezo Toledo for his 26 June 2021 email containing links to several sites including the Vulcan Catalogue referred to above.) Works numbers were 3737-3740 in 1924, 3805-3809 in 1938, and 5834-5848 in 1948.

Classic combination of Belpaire firebox, Walschaert outside constant-lead radial valve gear, and very British lines overall made for a successful goods engine on the Cape Gauge. Although similar to many other Cape Gauge Mountains, these engines had cylinders with an unusual diameter.

Over the 25 years, the 221 stud grew from 4 to 9 to 24.
